In 2005 i was asked by ArtsNK, (The organisation that delivers arts projects for North Kesteven District Council) to be the artist to lead this project. It was to be alongside a cottage that had belonged to a late resident who had been an awesome member of the community, and was to be in her memory. We were to use some of the felled oak trees that I had persuaded them to rescue from the A46 road dualling. A Local Artist, Cliff Baxendale, had done a detailed design for the seat, it includes a shortened seating area, where the back continues on, so that wheelchair users can sit alongside their friends. The seat was carved in situ mostly. The volunteers all started on a practice piece, as was my habit, to let them feel comfortable with the chisels, but some were very unwilling to leave the practice piece untill it was full of lovely images of local wildlife. This was their piece, that they designed as they went, and it became ' 'the apprentice bench' which has its own site.
